Back in December, it launched a bolder, brighter, and simplified icon for Firefox Quantum that was “less about fur and more about a being made of flame,” the company wrote in a blog post. It’s not the first design change the Mozilla platform’s undergone recently, either. “Our focus at this point is on the system.” “Each individual icon will undergo several rounds of refinement, or may change entirely, between now and their respective product launches,” the company said. The next lines, in order, are as follows: general purpose browser icons (including Developer Edition and Nightly colors), singularly-focused browser icons (Firefox Focus and Firefox Reality), and finally new applications and services (the five icons in the last two lines). Mozilla hopes this is what users will one day think of when they hear the word “Firefox.”

The first icon is the Firefox masterbrand icon, an umbrella under which all the product lines will live. That said, the name “Firefox” is staying, so Mozilla doesn’t have that much wiggle room.Ī team of Mozilla product and brand designers has come up with two options: Instead of recoloring the logo and dissecting the fox, the company wants to start from scratch. Mozilla’s already uploaded some possible takes, and now wants users to comment on its blog for feedback about what the icons should look like.įor most people, Firefox refers to a browser, but the company wants the brand to encompass all the various apps and services that the Firefox family of internet products cover, “from easy screenshotting and file sharing to innovative ways to access the internet using voice and virtual reality.” The fox with a flaming tail “doesn’t offer enough design tools to represent this entire product family,” Mozilla believes.

#FIREFOX NEW LOGO SERIES#

This time around, though, the plan isn’t just to create one new icon for the flagship browser, but to design an entire series of icons to fit the brand’s different ventures - from mobile and VR browsers, to screenshot and file sharing tools. The downsides of Chrome just seem so much more egregious than the occasional Mozilla silliness.Mozilla is redesigning the Firefox logo, with a little help from the rest of us. Slowly introducing user-unfriendly features, even in ChromiumĪs far as I can tell the rational choice would be Firefox (or some derivative browser) barring some specific technical need for Chrome. The biggest problem seems to be the continued survival of the project over timeĬhrome pros: I don't use Chrome but as far as I can tell it benefits from being the default browser that devs optimize for and reportedly has good developer tools.Ĭons: essentially a monopolistic data-gathering tool for one of the shadiest ad companies on Earth. Robot thing, the sort of waste of donations in the OP link, and occasional minor performance issues compared to Chrome. Can generally be assumed to be privacy-friendly to some degreeĬons: some cringe-worthy decisions such as that Mr. However the programmers behind FF are ostensibly quite keen on privacy and the like.įirefox pros: the browser works, has good support for add-ons and some features not found in Chrome such as containers. Using FF does not combat anything: it's a bloody web browser - no more or less. Browser sync data costs less than pence to manage (I have quite a lot of sites, storage and decent links to piss around with.) Then I'll migrate my firm and then my customers and my family of course. Now I think I'll move back to FF again and keep my bookmarks etc to myself. I used to use the old FF sync thing and it was a right old pain moving to the Google one but seemed the right thing to do at the time. I moved from FF to Chrom wholesale a few (10+?) years back because "reasons" - probably compatibility. Good skills FF and that reminds me to get off my arse and ditch some other browsers. Some of the comments/memes about this are implying via the logo that FF is losing their way. They are pointing out that some folk have noted that their logo is getting more and more stylistic and the fox bit might disappear.
